One of Sunderlands first great events of the 20Th century was the opening of Sunderland Electric Tramways on August 15Th 1900, The photograph above shows civic dignitaries outside the Town Hall ready to board the electric trams bound for the seaside at Roker.(Image by kind permission of the Sunderland Echo)

Here we see tram No 26 at Southwick Green Terminus on the Villette Rd Via Christchurch route, this single deck tram was delivered in January 1901. Funny how Policemen always get in on the act.
Tram 11 seen here making its way up Roker Terrace in 1905 had a chequered life, in 1935 it was converted to an illuminated car for the Royal Silver Jubilee, after the event the Tram was scraped and the fleet number was never used again.

Tram No 10 seen here arrived on the 14Th of September 1900,as you can see above the car suffered severe damage during a Zeppelin raid on April 1st 1916. 22 People died in the raid that night including a Tramways Inspector.
Tram 22 was delivered to the service in January 1901, when the Transport Department switched to welding the lines in 1914 this single deck Tram was converted to a welding car,Tram 22 can be seen here at Hylton Rd depot in 1915.
